Bob Wills is Still the King
A Dream come true
I met Bob Wills in 1949 when I was a senior at Claremore, Oklahoma High
School. Bob and his Texas Playboys were there November 4th to celebrate
Will Rogers’ birthday. I’d been slipping in Cain’s Ballroom for a couple
of years, standing in front of the stage, wishing I could play in his
band – never dreaming that someday I’d be producing his records.
–I’ve wanted to do this project for a long time to let everyone know all
the different influences Bob made on all kinds of music. Leon and I have
spent hundreds of hours working on this cd. – Tommy Allsup
Stage Fright
My Bob Wills recollections of our good times and bad times are many in
number. One does come to mind though, our first appearance at the Golden
Nugget in Las Vegas in 1960. They were about to open the curtain, Bob
looked at me and said, “Son, you really look nervous.” I replied, “Sir,
I’m petrified.” Bob said, “Good—I never did see a horse run worth a damn
if he wasn’t quivering in the gate.” – Leon Rausch
